Christopher McDermott
He has worked both in industry and academia, in a science role, a consultant’s role and a manager’s role in international multidisciplinary science projects. Chris studied Geology (BSc., 1988) and Engineering Geology (MSc., 1989) at the University of Durham, UK, then worked as a consultant in Geotechnics until 1994 whereupon he continued his education at the Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen, Germany, gaining a further post M.Sc. level qualification in Hydrogeology, then a PhD (1999), and then his habilitation (2006) in Applied Geoscience and Hydroinformatics. As well as an active researcher, he was responsible for the development and management of international Masters Courses. With over 70 refereed articles and an h index of 21 (google scholar, June 2023) his research focus is on advancing the understanding, experimental investigation and mathematical modelling of coupled thermo‐hydro‐mechanical and chemical (THMC) processes in geological systems. The main themes he works on are related to geo-energy security, water resources and climate change (CO2 sequestration). In the last five years this has included applications relating to CCS, Shale gas, geothermal energy and radioactive waste disposal. He is currently the academic lead of the industry sponsored geothermal mine energy project Galleries 2 Calories looking to store and recycle surface waste heat in extensive legacy mine workings south of Edinburgh INFORMATION | G2C | Geothermica. Chris is a cotask lead within the international DECOVALEX project. Chris also coordinates an international 1.5 M+ Euro project establishing unique experimental equipment for the investigation of fluid flow in large laboratory scale (200mm diameter) fractured samples under geo-reservoir conditions of pressure, temperature and chemistry – THMC reservoir conditions GREAT Cell Laboratory | The University of Edinburgh. Finally Chris is the degree program coordinator for the MSc. in Applied Environmental Hydrogeology
