Anas Sidahmed participated in DECOVALEX 2027

Doctoral Candidate Anas Sidahmed recently took part in DECOVALEX 2027 Workshop #4, held from 3–7 November 2025 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California.

As a member of the D2027 Task SAFENE-2 team, he presented new results from his ongoing research on Advanced 3D Hydro-Mechanical Modelling of Changing Intermediate Stress in Fractured Crystalline Rocks. His contribution highlighted recent advances in understanding stress redistribution and coupled HM behaviour in complex geological settings—key elements for the safe design and long-term performance of deep geo-energy and geo-storage systems.

During the workshop, Anas also joined technical field trips organized by the LBNL team, gaining firsthand insights into experimental facilities and monitoring infrastructures relevant to the DECOVALEX community.

This participation reinforces the project’s commitment to high-quality research, international collaboration, and the development of robust modelling approaches for subsurface safety assessment.

SMILE MSCA-DN takes place at the European Reserachers Night

On September 26th, members of the SMILE MSCA-DN network took part in the European Researchers’ Night at CaixaForum Palma (Mallorca, Spain), joining hundreds of events across Europe designed to bring science closer to society. Our team will contribute with interactive workshops and talks that combine research, reflection, and a touch of humor.

📍 Venue: CaixaForum Palma – Sala Alexandre Rosselló
👥 Audience: Families (afternoon sessions) and adults (evening show)

Family Workshop: Why are there no rivers in Mallorca?

17:30 (Catalan) & 18:30 (Spanish)
Led by Anna Aguiló, Víctor Vilarrasa Riaño, and Rotman Criollo Manjarrez (IMEDEA-UIB-CSIC).
In the Balearic Islands, permanent rivers do not exist. Rainwater infiltrates underground and is stored in aquifers, which act like natural sponges, slowly releasing water and enabling the formation of valuable wetlands. This interactive workshop will explore how water infiltrates and is stored in rocks, why groundwater is essential for life in the Balearics, and the challenges and threats it faces today. Families engaged through hands-on experiments, critical thinking, and science.

Late Show: Research on Stage

20:00 – 21:00 (in Catalan)
For the evening session, aimed at an adult audience, science meets entertainment. The show featured dynamic micro-talks with researchers from the local community, blending scientific insight with humor. Among the highlights: “What if the solution to climate change lies beneath our feet?” by Víctor Vilarrasa Riaño (IMEDEA-UIB-CSIC).

The European Researchers’ Night is a unique opportunity to meet scientists working in our community, discover their research, and enjoy science in an engaging and accessible format.

The “RESEARCH NIGHT: BRINGING RESEARCHERS INTO THE LIGHT” project is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions funded event. Call ID: 101162311/HORIZON-MSCA-2023-CITIZENS-01 (Marie Sklodowska-Curie-European Night of Researchers and Actions of Researchers in Schools 2024-2025).

Exploring Frontiers with the CSIC National Awards: 'Geoengineering and Ecological Transition'

The 2024 National Research Awards, granted by Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, have honored six CSIC researchers in fields like Particle Physics, Geoenergy, Biomedicine, and more.

To share this knowledge, CSIC is hosting the second edition of its conference series "Exploring Frontiers with the CSIC National Awards" from January to September 2025 in Madrid.

The fourth conference, titled "Geoengineering for the Ecological Transition," takes place on April 22 at 6:00 p.m. at the Residencia de Estudiantes. Víctor Vilarrasa (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB) will discuss geoengineering solutions for achieving net-zero emissions, including geothermal energy, carbon storage, and underground energy storage.

These technologies could reduce global emissions by 20–30%, though challenges like seismic risk and gas leakage remain. The event will explore how to manage these risks and ensure clean, reliable energy.

Admission is free until full. RSVP required. Streaming available.
